Marie was so proud of herself, going into the city without her husband or kids. ‘Don’t make eye contact, don’t make eye contact,’ she told herself, having to walk around a light post, taking her just inches from the man and easily within his reach, should he choose to reach for her or accost her in any way. On autopilot, she continued walking as she held her breath and waited for the worst to happen.

Marie breathed a sigh of relief when nothing transpired, and she was able to get past them. Minutes later, although still shaken, she was at the marketplace walking around amongst the crowds. Something made her turn suddenly and it was then that she noticed an older man in dark colors with his hand very near the opening of her handbag, which was flung onto her shoulder. She assumed he’d been planning to quietly go for the wallet within, and she’d have been none the wiser if she hadn’t spotted him.

It occurred to Marie that perhaps it was time to rely on something more than not making eye contact and trying to keep her handbag under surveillance.
