Amazing Young Prodigy Joins Boise Philharmonic

By Eric D. Ellis on 1st July, 2009

Renaud Boucher-BrowningHere in the Treasure Valley, few musicians have the talent and skill to meet the high expectations of Boise Philharmonic Maestro Robert Franz. But amazingly, in a recent audition, a 16-year-old high school student made the cut.

Renaud Boucher-Browning is a senior at Boise High School and now a professional Double-Bass player with the symphony orchestra, playing side-by-side with the organization’s most seasoned musicians.

Boucher-Browning began his musical training with the piano, but at age ten, his musical interests turned to conducting. Then, at 11 years of age, he became enthralled with the Double-Bass, a massive stringed instrument that dwarfs other symphonic instruments.

New Cap and Trade Energy Bill Could Cost Boise Area Businesses, Residents

By Armando Roggio on 29th June, 2009

blog-capIn spite of protests from Idaho Democratic Representative Walt Minnick, the Democrat-dominated US House of Representative passed a new climate bill that is likely to cost Boise residents $560 each per year.

"After several weeks of very serious consideration, I have decided to vote against the American Clean Energy and Security Act," Idaho Representative Minnick said. " 'Cap and trade' is not the best way to control greenhouse gas emissions, nor is it the right solution for Idaho. It will raise prices, make it harder to invest and is bad for business at a time when we must be focused on creating jobs."

Minnick was one of a very few democrats that did not vote right along party lines.

    Happy Birthday Rollerball

By Armando Roggio on 25th June, 2009

blog-rollerballSome 34 years ago today on June 25, 1975, United Artists released its anti-corporate classic, Rollarball, a cult film every guy has to watch at least once.

"In the dystopian future, global megacorporations rule the planet. They maintain their power by channeling and releasing human hostility through rollerball -- an anything-goes, worldwide sport designed to show the forcibly subdued populace that individualism is futile," read an official description of the move. " But when the popularity of the game's finest player, Jonathan E. (James Caan), threatens their reign, the corporate bigwigs devise a scheme that could put the superstar six feet under."

The film was based on a William Harrison short story, Roller Ball Murder, that first appeared in Esquire Magazine in 1973. As one reviewer said, this movie is another great 1970s-era cult classic with a good cast, strong performances, and a smart script.

The second crash happened around 2:00 in the afternoon. A 93-year-old man collided with a car as he was riding east on Franklin Road. The extent of his injuries was not known but he was cited for riding against the flow of traffic.

Local FoodsTrying to eat more produce and other foods grown in the Boise area? Many people, in Idaho and throughout the nation, are committing themselves to eating more locally-produced foods. Folks who eat foods grown and produced close to home are called locavores and their local food movement is gaining ground.

Early Warning: Snoop Dog is Coming to the Idaho Center

By Armando Roggio on 16th June, 2009

blog-snoopHardcore rap star Snoop Dog will bring his entourage to the Boise area on July 19, 2009 for a concert that is likely to be for good music fans and for local law enforcement, but that parents will want their kids to avoid.

"We get all the hoodlums in a confined space," one anonymous source said, "it makes them a lot easier to arrest."

It would not be at all uncommon for Snoop Dog's show to be arresting, at a show in May of this year the Beaufort County, South Carolina Sheriff's Department made more than 30 arrests for juvenile drug and alcohol use at the show. And at several other Snoop Dog (whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr.) shows police have collected marijuana and other drugs from kids in their early teens.

Ten Years of Great Food at Goodwood

By Armando Roggio on 8th June, 2009

blog-goodwoodThis year the Treasure Valley's own Goodwood Barbeque Company is celebrating its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of great food and excellent service that no corporate chain can compete with.

In 1999, restaurateurs Mike Mantooth and Steve Cooper decided to open a restaurant that was connected to the community.

"The idea of Goodwood is a throwback to a simple local owner operator mentality.  We wanted to set ourselves apart from the multitude of chain, robotic restaurants that litter the dining landscape," Cooper wrote in an email to me.
